it’s super weird, I mean, cute I guess? but weird. and when Riv and I saw the preview during Man of Steel, she pointed out that there does not appear to be a single female character. (at least from the preview) xoxoxoxo

Right? I mean, ha ha, a snail that wants to go fast is as silly as a rat wanting to be a gourmet cook, and cool? I guess? But, yeah, totally weird. I’ve watched the preview, like, four times now, and every time my mind is screaming, “WHAT IS GOING ON?!” and it gets really confusing and hectic for a minute. I don’t know. Dubious film is dubious. And yeah, no lady snails at all, and no lady counterpart to the human guy training (?) the snail (which I think he first kidnapped, but then they’re cool? I don’t know.). Anyway, there’s bound to be a pretty lady snail love interest with a nominal mention, at least (do they make kids movies without at least implied love interests? It’s weird, right? Creeps me out.), but that will clearly be the only role of the character. Gross. Sorry for all the parentheses. You caught me in a chatty and tangent-y mood. I’ll hug your neck! ♥

Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss - Didn’t...

Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss - Didn’t Leave Nobody but the Baby

No, no. See, you see, the snail is the car. He’s a racesnail. I think he does have, like, an engine on his shell? Or something?

i did, actually! i lived in a teeny town called friendship, which was located a pretty similar distance from cincinatti and louisville, actually. it was pretty conservative, but it was beautiful and super laid back, and i still kind of miss it.

That’s just a bit up the road from Hanover - only 33 miles according to google maps, which it was totally NOT creepy to look at, right? Cool. The Midwest and the South are weird places for me in that they are (typically) so socially conservative, and therefore should be really uncomfortable for me, but I just love everything else about the culture so much that it somehow makes up for it. Or I’m unwittingly filled with self-loathing and want to live among people who think I’m sinful as some sort of penance. Basically, I feel you on the “it was conservative but beautiful and laid back and I miss it” vibe.

not creepy at all, i totally looked up where hanover was on google maps, too! i think until somewhat recently i was trying to deny just how much i like the way things work in a more rural setting because that’s inherently bad or something? it’s really nice though. it’s lower stress than big cities, and in my experience there’s been a tendency for folks to overlook things they are generally opposed to once you’ve established relationship with them. i know that’s still super problematic, but it definitely makes it easier to enjoy living in that setting. my opinion might be shaded by the fact that other than sarasota, i’ve never lived in a town with a population over 6,000 people, though.

Oh good not creepy!

I think it’s easy, when you are queer and still shaking free from the various horrors of going through the process of realizing it in a small town, to think that the problem is the smallness/ruralness of the town, and my god you just want to escape it and be out of there. But people are bags of dicks everywhere, unfortunately, and there’s no escaping that, and so then you start to notice the differences that aren’t so positive on the more urban side. Nobody makes eye contact. Everything costs a billion dollars. So much rushing around and traffic and noise. It’s like being in an ant colony. Which some people genuinely love. But if you don’t love that urban atmosphere, it will start to get a lot easier to think of yourself as happy in a rural area. And I think you’re right about the tendency of most folks to overlook what they’re opposed to (and I should acknowledge that I’m certain being white and female helps me here - gay men and/or POC of any orientation probably have a rougher time of it). In my experience, you’re neighbors, and politeness matters in such regions typically, so you wave and they wave and maybe tomatoes get passed over the fence and traded for zucchini or whatever, and they compliment your lights on the house at the holidays and you find something to compliment that isn’t the light-up Nativity in their yard - some call it back-stabbing, I guess, but it’s just civil behavior I think. Neither you nor they are pretending to be friends or anything, you’re just being decent to each other. And who knows, maybe friendly queer neighbors will help them see that the gays aren’t inherently evil. But we’ll aim for civil behavior first …

kate-foreverfan:

They’re places apart, sanctuaries of pure thought.”

-
Paul Auster (via picadorbookroom)

I wonder if Paul Auster has been to one recently, though.

Libraries have actually become, in the US at least, de facto homeless shelters and centers for the mentally ill, as well as a resource for those needing childcare as well as the unemployed seeking work. There’s now signs on some of them in New York barring people from bringing ‘large packages’ which basically means ‘homeless people cannot bring their life’s belongings in here’—but they allowed it for almost a decade as homelessness in New York reached epic proportions. There’s actually very few places in American life so of this world, more than a library. Most public libraries are where you can see what is really going on for most Americans in a way you won’t ever see on the news or in a television show, or even in most fiction or nonfiction. And it is to the credit of most librarians that they continue to operate, despite budget cuts, the outlandish depravity of austerians and privitization mongrels. So, let’s not treat libraries like delicate flowers or temples withdrawn from the concerns of the world. They’ve shown themselves to be much tougher than that. Let’s instead make them what they should be, a better thing than what they’ve had to become—and look to what has been laid at their feet as a map to what our country really needs from its government services.

Alexander Chee, telling it like it is.

High-five, Mr. Chee. P-R-E-A-C-H. Even on my private campus, with signs posted everywhere saying you have to have a student ID to avoid getting kicked off campus (that’s pretty unenforced), our main library is open to the public. Free printing, free wi-fi, and access to a limited number of computers that don’t require log-in and are equipped with Adobe Reader and MS Word. Members of the local community come in and do everything from job searches and applying online to just getting through freezing or sweltering DC day and night when they’ve got nowhere else to go. Libraries are absolutely in and of this worldly world, and all the librarians I know take that very seriously.

Remember Kate, who I was just talking about a couple of posts...

Remember Kate, who I was just talking about a couple of posts ago? Of course you do.

This is me (and a double magnum of Arrogant Bastard ale), on her farm a few years ago, the day after my sweetie and I got married! We had the ceremony on our college campus (dorks!), and wanted to be able to have more time with our core chosen family than just the reception, especially since some had traveled all the way from the west coast! The only logical choice was a post-wedding camp-out. Kate let us use her land (and she even rented a port-a-potty!) for the weekend, so the day after the wedding we all showed up, pitched our tents, and I started a 12-pound pork shoulder smoking on a charcoal grill. And that mild abrasion on my right arm is from playing softball; and we had a bonfire; and it was awesome. All thanks to Kate saying she would love nothing more than a rowdy hootenanny on her quiet farm, and not charging us one penny for her trouble. She is the best person.

Also, if you and your friends enjoy camping, a post-wedding camp out is pretty much exactly the perfect conclusion to a wedding.

hey! if you don't mind my asking, what part of rural indiana did you live in?

Hey! I don’t mind at all. Did you live in Indiana for a while?

I went to college at Hanover - it’s in very southern Indiana on top of a hill (how’s that for specific). It has pretty much spoiled me for almost any other location because it was literally the middle of nowhere (at least back when we were still in school there), woods and fields everywhere, the beautiful Ohio River (which I grew up on, in WV), and the rural pace of life that goes with such things; however, all of this happened between one and two hours away from three quite decent cities - Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Louisville - so it was super easy to go to museums or concerts or international groceries or whatever you wanted to do that rural life doesn’t include. It is the perfect place. I still don’t understand why I’m not there right now.

Sir Duck! you are absolutely painfully adorable! *gives many many hugs and some cake* Tell me, if you could hang out with one person who is alive today - all day who would it be? what would you do?

*BLUSHES FURIOUSLY while eating cake*

Hi! You know, as tempting as it is to say I’d spend the day with Amy Ray (because, I mean, come ON), I don’t know how the rest of the answer would go. Maybe I’d just sob in front of her, awkwardly stammering thanks and admiration, until she got uncomfortable enough to leave? That seems the most likely scenario.

So I’ll go the non-celebrity route. I’d spend the day with my friend Kate, who used to be my undergrad advisor, and is literally one of the most amazing women/people I’ve ever known ever. I love her so much and it’s not even embarrassing because everyone who knows her thinks that she’s pretty much the best person on the planet. No really. Ask around. It’ll be unanimous. She’ll make the top five list of everyone, no problem. Anyway, she’s great. And spending time with her is rejuvenating and grounding and comforting and lovely. She teaches philosophy at my alma mater still, and lives on a farm with her husband and their two dogs and a lot of chickens and some goats, and says she loves to tend her garden because it’s the gentlest form of attempting to wrangle chaos and decay into ordered growth. That’s the kind of person she is. I haven’t been able to visit in a couple years, and I miss her terribly.

If it was okay with her, I’d have us spend the day together on her turf rather than here in DC because, frankly, I like rural Indiana better, shocking though that may be. And what would we do? There would be lots of talking and visiting and she probably would slap my leg and yell, “No SHIT!” at least once; we’d probably make some rolls or bread, because she makes bread daily for the family meals and lets me help when I visit; we would definitely drink beer, though she might opt for hard cider if that’s her mood, and it would be good beer because her husband is also most excellent and a beer nerd and goes out of his way to find good and interesting beers to share with me when I’m there; it’s summer, so all 3 of her boys would be home from school and such, so I’d probably spend some time talking to them, too, because, not too surprisingly, she and her husband have raised some really cool kids; we’d pet their dogs and feed the chickens and goats; she’d walk me around their property and point out plans for what to do with that corner down there or that patch over there…

We wouldn’t really do much exciting, I guess, but it would all be perfect. In my perfectest perfect world scenario, I get hired to teach at my alma mater, and then Kate and I could be friends at a much closer distance and also colleagues, which would be fucking kick ass. When I grow up I want to be Kate.
